Microsoft has kicked off the pre-order program for the new Surface Go, allowing customers to reserve the device from the company’s website, with shipments to begin on August 2.

Surface Go is a new device specifically aimed at the education market, running Windows 10 in S Mode and coming with hardware that allows Microsoft to reduce the final price.

It can be pre-ordered in two different configurations, as it follows: Intel 4415Y processor, 64GB storage, and 4GB RAM at $399 and Intel 4415Y chip, 128GB storage, and 8GB RAM at $549. Both the Surface Go Signature Type Cover and the Surface Pen are sold separately.

Eligible students, parents, teachers, and military can purchase the entry-level configuration for $379.05, while the more powerful version is available for $521.55. Customers can check their eligibility on the product’s page on the Microsoft Store.

Most affordable Surface ever

Starting at $399 for consumers, Surface Go is the most affordable Microsoft Surface model ever released, though in full configuration and with all accessories it exceeds $800.

And while it does run full Windows 10 (if upgraded from the S Mode), it’s important to keep in mind that this isn’t a production monster, but only a device supposed to let you run basic tasks and that’s it.

Aimed at the education market, Surface Go comes with hardware that won’t help you play the latest games, but at least it’s an affordable way to be part of the Windows 10 ecosystem while also benefitting from the premium Surface experience.

Both models of the Surface Go are still in stock at the time of writing this article, and we can only assume that this is because pre-orders aren’t exactly overwhelming. We’ll find out more about this when the device starts shipping in early August.
